The 1979 300SD is always reliable but it has needed engine mounts for years. And I've had them on a shelf for years. Today I decided to finally replace them.</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">There's a YouTube video by A1Auto that shows the engine mount replacement on a W126 with an OM617. It's roughly the same for the W116, but a couple of hints:</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">- On the W116 I was able to replace the driver's side mount without removing the engine shock. On the passenger side I did remove the shock for access to the inboard bolt of the two that hold the mount to the subframe. It was still pretty tight. I have a set of low-clearance hex bits with a ratchet handle that saved the day.</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">- I don't have a lift, so I had the front end of the car up on ramps. The center holes on the mounts will NOT line up with the holes in the subframe if the car is not level. It took me a couple of hours of fruitless swearing and trying to pry the engine forward before I thought to try rolling the car down off the ramps. That made it a tight squeeze to get under the car, but I could do it. The driver's side mount hole was lined up perfectly, so I got that bolt started. The passenger side needed to come towards the outside of the car, and I couldn't find a good place to get a pry bar in. So I took a ratchet strap, attached one end to the right-hand bundt wheel and the other to the engine lift eye and cranked it tight. That did the trick, and I was able to get the other bolt in.</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">Here's the old driver's side mount:</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><a href="https://user.fm/files/v2-07ef472a00f286fcb1e16102b84ecb5a/IMG_0510.jpeg">https://user.fm/files/v2-07ef472a00f286fcb1e16102b84ecb5a/IMG_0510.jpeg</a></div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">The passenger side wasn't that bad but it was still collapsed.</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">I had removed the air cleaner to get better access to the passenger side mount, and two of the three rubber mounts for the air cleaner had separated. This was probably caused by all the excess vibration of the engine. I glued them back with Shoe Goo, taking a page from the Jim Cathey playbook. Hopefully they'll hold.</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">The air filter was in so tight that I could not get it out without destroying it. It needed a change anyway, but I don't have one on hand. So I'll run to FLAPS tomorrow and pick one up, hopefully someone in town has one.</div><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div><div style="font-family:Arial;">Allan</div><div>-- </div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://www.okiebenz.com">http://www.okiebenz.com</a></div><div><br></div><div>To search list archives <a href="http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/">http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/</a></div><div><br></div><div>To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to:</div><div><a href="http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com">http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com</a></div><div><br></div></blockquote><div style="font-family:Arial;"><br></div></body></html>
