[MBZ] '83 300SD transmission

My mechanic has another '83 300SD at his shop (almost a twin to mine-dark 
brown leather instead of my palomino) that blew about 1.5 qts of transmission 
fluid out the vent the other day.  Fluid is not burnt, and the transmission 
still shifts fine.  Car was being used for errands, running about 5-15 miles 
at a time during the day.  Engine coolant was at normal temp.  Any one have 
ideas about what might have happened?  My mechanic is wondering if there is 
ever a problem with the trans fluid cooler collapsing and causing a pressure 
buildup.  What other things might have happened?  TIA all.
