Because garages kill cars.

Right off the bat, the brakes are FUBAR, the fuel tank is full of rust,
the fuel system is full of Minwax, and everything rubber needs to be
replaced. Since "storage" translates as "in a shed in humid Arkansas,"
the car's troubles are compounded, especially on those cylinders whose
valves have been open all this time, to say nothing of the damage and
hantavirus the mice have left behind.

I've been dealing a lot lately with cars that have been sitting for
years, under ideal climate-controlled conditions. They're all full of
stupid problems that are so easy to avoid. The 220A, 280SE 3.5, Beetle,
and currently 280SL all have 20-40 hours in them to reach "drive around
the block" condition (okay, so I'm slow). The 300D about which I wrote
earlier presented no problems, but that is a rather unusual exception.
