Thanks Brian. Yes, it's been a reliable wagon too. Only one incapacitating
roadside breakdown in the 18 years I've had it (clutch thrust-bearing).

When I was looking for a secondhand MB wagon in 1988, I wanted a diesel with
manual transmission but at that time, there were very few diesel W123 sedans
or wagons in NZ. Almost all the W123s were automatics. Dealers and other
advisers told me to steer well clear of diesel ("no future in that fuel,
mate"). They were convinced that the manual transmission made this wagon
worthless ("stay clear of it, mate, it's a dog.").

Now, I get regular inquiries  from passers-by wanting to know if the wagon
is for sale. That's a nice feeling, even if, in dollar (and insurance)
terms, its market value is relatively low.
