I would think rust is likely the major issue. They were built in the mid to late 70's so are getting pretty old.
They were inexpensive to begin with so people did not take the sort of care that they may have with an MB. There
were other issues as well. Handling was bad and things like steering parts wore out quickly. We only drove our 77
Monarch about 100K miles and I think the power steering valve was replace about 4 times. By the time we got rid of
it, the plastic parts inside were starting to crumble, and we are not in the south where heat would be a major
issue.
