Curt,
I like your attitude on this-a basic requirement for these old MB
diesels. Good luck tomorrow.

Thanks to everybody who replied.
As I say Marshall encouraged me, but everybody else is making me
sad...
At any rate we'll see what tomorrow brings. Bob (my Indy) is a nice
guy and has always done right by me, including the 5 free alternators to
get one in my 240D that would stay running. He only once charged me
labor on a reinstalled alternator and thats when I said he'd ought to do
some troubleshooting to track down what was eating 'em, and then he only
charged me $5. I'm honestly sure he'd have just kept putting in new ones
as long as I kept bringing the car back...
Tomorrow is a new day, we'll see what happens.

I have no technical knowledge of the system - none at all. But
logically, it seems to me that the IP bears a relationship to the O ring
with
the IP exerting pressure and the O ring providing resistance. For
example, if you were to remove the O ring altogether, what would happen?
It's
obvious, isn't it? Therefore, if the O ring is all that it should be,
the problem have something to do with inadequate pressure
(underperformance) from the IP. Does that make any sense? I might be
talking out my
ass, but perhaps this may explain the direction your wrench is taking
... or possibly offer a fragment to diagnostics.
