I'm by no means an expert, but I did discover a hot spot in my SD trunk.
It's in the shop now to be rid of bad rust under the rear window, and will
also have it checked for a missing heat shield over the muffler. Several
years ago I had a near trunk fire from some cleaning rags I left on the
trunk floor. Gets hotter than I would like. Yours does get better mileage
than mine. My highest has been 27+

Subject: [MBZ] Something Burnin? and Why I love my W126
Hi Gang,
Did a run down to Reading PA, this weekend. Took my 1990 350 SDL w/252K on
the clock. After about 2 hours of high-speed interstate driving, (75-80
mph) I started to smell something burning......smelled like a combination of
plastic, rubber and/oil burning. Not really strong, but SWMBO and I both
picks up on it. Checked for obvious leaks, fluid levels, belt, tires, etc,
found nothing unusual. If I keep the speed down to 60-70...no smell, so I
just drove a little slower, made our destination and back home again.
Unloading the car back home, I noticed the smell in the trunk, but not the
cabin of the car! Any clues as to where to look or what might be wrong?
I know it's a vague description, but I have to start somewhere!
This is/was the first long trip I've taken in a while with this car, so
maybe it's a problem I've had for a while. The only stuff I recently did
was replace a bad glow plug, a breather hose and the Boost Pressure Control
Hose on the turbo. (Should that one be something other than generic fuel
line hose?)
On a positive note, on the way home, I drove 164 miles on 5.5 gal of diesel
for 29.82 MPG. Can't hate that.......
